![]() Since they're pretty new to web development or just software development, in general, they're having a very hard time getting their head around the features of Rails. Take note that they are also using RailsTutorial by Michael Hartl as their reference: I'm helping a couple of beginners in web development learn Rails and here's what I noticed about most of them. Also, your mileage may vary when learning Rails and it depends a lot on your knowledge in the tools revolving Rails. My opinion on Rails is that it's not meant for beginners. One step at a time: first get RVM working, see step 3 to test: You're learning a lot of different systems. ] & source "$HOME/.rvm/scripts/rvm"Īnything else RVM decided to do is unnecessary and probably should be reverted.Īnyway, have patience. The following line should go in your ~/.bashrc file, it is just a one-liner to check if rvm exists and run its setup script: profile, which is what Ubuntu creates by default. This breaks everything in the terminal, because. ![]() It should only add a single line to your ~/.bashrc, but I've known it to instead create ~/.bash_profile and add its stuff there. One suggestion: Lately RVM has been doing completely the wrong thing with my bash environment scripts when I install it, and your issues with it may stem from this. Installing rails on the Ubuntu default Ruby never worked for me. That said, I've found RVM to be far and away the most reliable and useful way of installing Ruby and Rails on Ubuntu. I had the same issue with Rails for a while, and it takes a while to learn everything. I'm thinking of just going for a Windows install but I don't want to give up on this if I can help it.Ī lot of your problems may simply be due to being unfamiliar with Linux and/or Ruby. So really my question is has anybody else had a lot of problems with getting everything to work? How do you find the motivation to keep going when you cannot find a solution? I know nobody who could help me in real life and don't really know how to even begin fixing these problems. I tried a separate method to install rails but now I'm missing a lot of the files and folders which are referred to in the tutorial such as app/assets and Gemfile. I have no idea how to properly install gems and the commands listed in the tutorial wont work for that either. I preinstalled git, curl and RVM but was having a lot of trouble getting the RVM to work correctly so I abandoned it after hours of googling. I've got a Ubuntu VM installed which is my first interaction with Linux. I've been wanting to follow but I'm running into so many problems that I'm not sure I can. I'm trying to learn Rails and I'm finding it all a real headache.
